The Last Ride of the Paykan
When Iran Dreamed of Industrialization
The Last Ride of the Paykan is a feature documentary about Ahmad and Mahmoud Khayami, the brothers who built Iran National and helped create the Paykan—the car that would become one of the most recognizable products and cultural symbols in modern Iranian history.
But this is not simply the story of two businessmen, or the story of a car.
Beginning in Mashhad, the film follows the Khayami brothers from their family’s modest commercial roots and their early years in trade to their ambition to build cars in Iran. In the 1960s, as Iran was undergoing rapid economic and social transformation, Ahmad and Mahmoud pursued a project that seemed almost impossible at the time: establishing a modern automotive industry in a country with little previous experience in passenger-car manufacturing. Their efforts led to the creation of Iran National and, in 1966, to the production of the Hillman Hunter under the name Paykan.
The Paykan soon became much more than an industrial product. It entered the daily life of millions of Iranians, became a symbol of the expanding middle class, and represented a national ambition to manufacture, modernize and participate in the industrial world. The film explores how a car initially developed through an international industrial partnership was gradually presented and understood as an Iranian national car. It also examines the factories, workers, housing projects and social infrastructure created around Iran National, as well as the company’s attempts to expand exports and develop domestic manufacturing.
At the same time, the film looks beyond industrial success. The Khayamis’ story was deeply connected to the political and economic transformations of twentieth-century Iran. Their relationship with the monarchy, their access to government institutions, their dealings with foreign companies, and their growing business empire became increasingly controversial. Their separation, after years of working almost as one, also exposed the personal tensions beneath their public success. Iran National, Kourosh Department Stores and their other businesses became part of a larger story about private enterprise, state power, wealth and political change.
The 1979 Revolution changed everything.
The film follows the fate of the Khayami businesses after the Revolution, including the confiscation of their assets, the departure of Ahmad from Iran, the continuing work of Mahmoud, and the transformation of Iran National into Iran Khodro. It places the Paykan within the dramatic political atmosphere of post-revolutionary Iran, where the car remained immensely popular even as its makers became symbols of the previous economic order. The Paykan survived its founders and survived several political eras, eventually becoming an object of nostalgia, criticism and collective memory.
The story also extends to the broader history of Iran’s automotive industry: attempts at self-sufficiency, the pressures of war and sanctions, the limits of technological development, the Peugeot partnership, and the long decline of the Paykan itself. By the 1990s, the car that had once represented prosperity and modernity had become, for many, a symbol of technological stagnation and an aging industrial model. Yet even after its production ended, the Paykan remained alive in the memories of Iranians, preserved by collectors and remembered as a vehicle that belonged to ordinary people as much as to the history of industry.
At its heart, The Last Ride of the Paykan is a film about an unfinished dream.
What did industrialization mean to Iran? Can private enterprise survive without political power? What happens when economic ambition, state ideology and history collide? And why does a simple automobile become a powerful vessel for memory, identity and the hopes of an entire society?
Through archival images, personal memories, interviews and the voice of Ahmad Khayami himself, the film moves between industry and family, ambition and failure, prosperity and exile, political upheaval and collective memory.
The story begins with two brothers in Mashhad.
It ends with two brothers meeting again—in memory, in exile, and finally in the imagined afterlife.
Ahmad Mahmoud Al-Khayam.
Or perhaps Ahmad Mahmoud Al-Paykan.
